AC Problems

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The usual causes are a dirty air filter or evaporator coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor or fan motor, or a frozen coil. First check that the filter is clean and the thermostat is set to cool. If the air is still warm, turn the system off to avoid damage and call us so we can find the cause. Why is my AC freezing up?

Ice on the indoor coil or the refrigerant line usually means restricted airflow, such as a clogged filter or blocked vents, or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off and let the ice melt before calling us. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor and turn a small repair into a big one.

Why is my AC leaking water?

The most common cause is a clogged condensate drain line or a dirty drain pan. Houston humidity produces a lot of condensate, so these lines clog easily. Turn the AC off and call us, because water can stain ceilings and damage insulation quickly.

What do strange noises or smells from my AC mean?

Buzzing, grinding or squealing often points to a failing capacitor, fan motor or worn bearings. A musty smell can mean moisture or dirty coils, and a burning smell means you should switch the system off right away. Call us and describe what you hear or smell so we can prepare for the visit.

Why are my electric bills going up?

A dirty filter, an aging system, leaky ducts or low refrigerant all make the AC run longer to cool the same space. If the bill rises while your habits stay the same, a tune-up or a diagnostic visit is a good place to start.

Repair vs. Replacement

Should I repair or replace my AC?

Replacement is worth considering when the system is more than 10 to 15 years old, needs repeated repairs, or the repair would cost a large part of a new system. Older units that use R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced, are often better replaced. We give you an honest recommendation, not a sales push.

How long does an AC last in Houston?

Most systems last about 10 to 15 years. Houston heat, humidity and a long cooling season put heavy demand on equipment, so regular maintenance and clean filters make a real difference to how long yours lasts.

What size AC does my home need?

Square footage is only part of it. Insulation, windows, sun exposure, ductwork and the number of people in the home all matter. An oversized or undersized unit cools poorly and wastes energy, so we evaluate your home before recommending a system.

Maintenance

How often should I have my AC serviced?

At least once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. In Houston the AC runs most of the year, so a yearly check helps catch small problems, like a weak capacitor or a dirty coil, before they cause a breakdown on the hottest day.

How often should I change my air filter?

Every one to three months, depending on the filter type, pets, allergies and how much the system runs. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons for poor cooling, frozen coils and higher bills.

Working With Air Advanced

How much does AC repair cost?

It depends on the problem. A capacitor or contactor is a smaller repair than a refrigerant leak or a compressor. We diagnose the issue before providing repair pricing. Additional problems may affect the final price. A diagnostic fee applies and is credited toward the repair when you choose Air Advanced to complete the work. See more about AC repair in Houston.
